You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you.
I’d ruin any day, all my days, for those long nights with you, and I did. But that’s why right there it was doomed. We couldn’t only have the magic nights buzzing through the wires. We had to have the days, too, the bright impatient days spoiling everything with their unavoidable schedules, their mandatory times that don’t overlap, their loyal friends who don’t get long, the unforgiven travesties torn from the wall no matter what promises are uttered past midnight, and that’s why we broke up.
I snagged a book of forty-nine Hemingway stories in Philly and hadn’t started reading it until recently, and man. If you don’t usually do the whole classics thing (though they are classics for a reason), go for Hemingway. He’s very witty and candid and his stories run at quite a clip—you’ll learn stuff about his characters and about the world, too, before you even know you’re learning it.
Just thought I’d share that. My grandmother is here for the week (happy Mother’s Day!) to raise some hell and she’s been working at all of us, slowly but surely. If I die of eventual inability to put up with it and/or of mortification, please make sure everything I own is split evenly amongst my cousins. They understand.
So, yeah, books.
Kurt Vonnegut is the man, but I like that James Joyce quote too.

The Black Book of Colors by Menena Cottin
I stumbled across this while looking for a book for my cousin’s new baby. I was so intrigued by the whole idea. On each left page there was words written in braille and then again in white text. It was the description of colors, according to how a blind child would experience. On the right there were raised etchings of what each page was describing. It’s so beautiful.
One page in particular that really caught my attention was the one describing the color red. It talked about how red is how it feels to bite into a ripe strawberry, or the stinging on your knee after you fall down. Blue was the feeling of sunshine on your face.It’s just so astounding that someone managed this, as the idea of how to describe a color to someone who has no reference has always fascinated and baffled me.
